The ideal line between city and sanctuary is a window. Emerging from the prairie overlooking crystal clear lakes is the Lake Club. The Lake Club is the social and recreational heart of The Lakes at Centerra, a 255-acre community oriented to outdoor enthusiasts. In addition, The Lake Club acts as a trailhead for several miles of trails through natural open space under the stewardship of the High Plains Environmental Center. The Lake Club includes two buildings, the Community Building and the Pool Pavilion along with a pool and playground.
The rhythmic timber structural system and low sloping metal roofs of the buildings evoke memories of the agricultural structures that are common in the area, yet are modern in expression. The main pedestrian axis from the community splits the two buildings and terminates on the fishing dock. The broad overhangs progressively grow in dimension closer to the pedestrian way, providing protection for casual outdoor seating areas and the illusion that the buildings nod to each other. The Community Building serves as a meeting and party place for the community including a variety of seating and gathering places under a layered wood ceiling. The expansive windows enhance the indoor/outdoor experience and provide vistas of the lakes. A small kitchen for events and cooking demonstrations is the centerpiece of the interior. A “cloud” hovers over the bar area, bringing down the scale in the space and providing added drama. A two sided fireplace anchors the opposite end of the room. A fire pit on the terrace that faces the lake provides a place for residents to decompress at the end of the day. The pool is reminiscent of a “swimming hole”, and includes both lap swimming and water features oriented to young children. The Pool Pavilion provides welcome shade, restrooms, and a place to stow gear.
