Riggs Remodel

Two Clemson, S.C., siblings who had inherited their childhood home decided to retire from different areas of the country to live there together in our Home of the Week.

They sought to update and modernize the home while still retaining its original character. The renovation of the family room incorporated some of the original knotty pine into the design, and many of the original knotty pine interior doors were also retained.

The dining room and kitchen were completely renovated to better connect to the rest of the open floor plan, and a large island was added to become a gathering space.

New additions were constructed with separate master suites customized for each sibling and a media room. Exterior terraces with a fire pit were added to the rear of the home. This area is now a single-level and can be easily enjoyed as the siblings age.

Judges’ Comments: “Didn’t destroy house, but adapted it. Reused some of the original components. Great space, great solution, great outdoor features. Tremendously subtle, authentic.”
