Residence 8 is a 2014 Green Awards Honorable Mention for Single-Family: Production. Located in Denver, Colorado and submitted by Brookfield Homes, this wood-framed single-family residence boasts a HERS rating of 29 without sacrificing comfort of the home’s occupants or the happiness of their wallets (annual energy costs are estimated at approximately $900). Residence 8 is also the first PHIUS+ Certified Passive House built by a production builder in the US. Take a look at some of the home’s greener features below:

  • Home is built on a brownfield redevelopment site
  • 1.2 kW solar shingles
  • An energy recovery ventilator, or ERV
  • A 21 SEER air conditioning unit
  • Increased insulation in the foundations walls (R-47), frame walls (R-51), and ceilings and the attic (R-84)
  • R-5 doors with a U value of .15
  • Triple-glazed windows with a U value of .3 that are recessed into the thick exterior walls to optimize summer shading and to shield them from the weather
  • Energy Star appliances throughout the home
  • Energy efficient lighting throughout the home
  • A solar chimney that flushes out hot air during temperate climate cycles
  • Drought tolerant landscaping to reduce water usage
  • All bedrooms have cross ventilation to allow for natural cooling
