Home of the Week: Travis Heights Modern

This Austin, Texas builder met the challenge of creating a design that was interesting enough to convince the client to renovate an ugly block house instead of building new. (And speaking of new, the 2018 Best in American Living™ Awards are open until Aug. 24—have you submitted yet?)

The home needed to be a contemporary, easy-to-maintain space that offered views of the beautiful lot.

The entry was moved to one side, which created a circular flow of movement through the adjoining rooms.

On the outside, the very sophisticated beveled exterior trim detail was constructed to mate the new aluminum windows to the old masonry.

Inside, decades of bad plaster and sheetrock work had to be ground away to prepare for the new Diamond Wall interior plaster system.

New energy-efficient windows replaced old windows throughout the home, and open-cell foam was used to create a thermal envelope.

BALA judges were impressed with this “complete transformation; so sensitively done, similar scale but overall improvement makes it great.”
