Entice Millennials with Airbnb-Ready Designs

Production builders need solutions to turn millennials into home buyers. Consumer research conducted among millennials between 24 and 35 years old actively looking for a home informed the decision-making for this experimental dwelling. As a demonstration project, the team sought to create a home designed and built to deliver the must-haves millennials features with a plan and elevation character that adapts to any location at an attainable price point.

This modest sized dwelling lives big and throws convention out the window. Design drivers include: authenticity; a strong indoor/outdoor synergy; the ability to use the home and rooms in multiple ways; smart technology and; superior energy efficiency. At 2,145 square feet on a 47’ x 100’ lot, the home caters to the dual desires for traditional character and charm, as well as modern design. The outside is as much a part of the home as indoor spaces. Designers took advantage of every opportunity to add outdoor rooms on both levels and create glass walls that erase barriers between the two. There are two income generating flex spaces included in the design – a first-floor suite with a separate entrance and an over-the garage 384 square foot flat. Solar panels– integrated as design elements – result in a Net Zero energy home for electricity.

A single-story reverse front porch element – with the space turned away from street and to the inside – means the first experience of the home is a private outdoor living room. Millennials desire ample outdoor spaces for living and entertaining – Chris Mayer Photography
