Last year at the International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Design Committee partnered with the American Institute of Building Design (AIBD) and Operation Finally Home to create a philanthropic custom home design competition. The competition was created in order to give back to one of America’s wounded veterans returning from war, a young woman in her late twenties who suffered from severe traumatic brain injury that caused night seizures, as well as post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD). Four design teams gathered from across the country in the hopes of designing a custom dream home for this brave soldier that fit her unique everyday needs. All four teams were given nine hours to complete designs that addressed a list of specific requirements; 3-bedroom, single-family, detached home, no more than 1,800 square feet, oversized single-car garage and an interior that is wheelchair maneuverable. BSB Design from Des Moines, Iowa went home with the win, designing a home that the panel of judges believed, “just has everything.” How could you give back to your community through design?
