Highlighted this week is the Jack Weiss Residence located in Austin, Texas and submitted by Green Me Austin.
A 2014 Green Awards Honorable Mention for Single Family: Custom, the Jack Weiss Residence is designed with respect to rather than against the existing site conditions and climate. The project boasts a lengthy list of green features, ten of which are as follows:
Green building and site features
- Orientation-based window placement that is designed to harness daylighting and ventilation
- A solar-ready and highly reflective roof
- Low VOC paints
- A Rainbird Smart Controller Weather Station and Irrigation System that meets all criteria for the EPA WaterSense program
- A 2,500 gallon capacity rainwater harvesting cistern that feeds the irrigation system
- 83% of the construction waste was recycled
- No formaldehyde in carpet, carpet padding, and flooring adhesives and no added formaldehyde in the energy efficiency spray foam insulation
- WaterSense toilets and faucets
- Energy Star lighting and appliances
- Existing trees were protected, and all new plants are from the Austin Energy Green Building Grow Green list
