Home of the Week: Rockhill

This original 1,600-square-foot, Alamo Heights, Texas, ranch-style home was built in 1953.

It is a 2017 Best in American Living Awards Silver winner for Entire Home Remodel up to $250,000.

The owners required expansion for their growing family but were on a limited budget, so costs were focused on an addition and updating the existing exterior.

A family compound was created that used the available land for the necessary addition spaces, while the focus in the existing home with low, flat, 8-foot ceilings was on higher ceilings and finishes.

Interior walls of the original home were removed to open up the entry, dining and kitchen spaces, and the existing brick-and-stucco home was updated to include smooth, hard-troweled stucco accented with naturally rusting plate steel.

Judges noted the home is “sensitive and logical.”Read more and visit the photo gallery.
