Home of the Week: Dancing Light

This comfortable, modern Paradise Valley, Ariz. home celebrates nature while paying homage to the 180-degree, iconic mountain view. (Have you entered BALA yet? The 2018 Best in American Living™ Awards deadline is Aug. 24!)

Dancing Light was the 2017 BALA Platinum winner for One-of-a-Kind Custom or Spec Home 4,501 – 6,000 Square Feet.

Desert form, indigenous materials, natural light and mountain views inspire the 5,600-square-foot home, which serves as a collection of related, yet separate, structures, with main areas spaced around a central atrium and connected by glass corridors.

Natural light transforms the mood of the home, dancing across the fractured planes of earth and wood and providing a Zen-like calm.

A key feature is the soaring roofline, which is a standing-seam, metal-and-wood structure floating on metal posts that serves as shelter from the hot desert sun.

BALA judges had a lot to say about Dancing Light: “Spectacular,” “the roof is everything, with its floating characteristics and the use of solids and voids,” “takes indoor-outdoor relationship to the limit,” “that’s how you do it.”
