Holly Ridge Remodel

Shiel Residence, 8059 Hollyridge Road, Jacksonville, FL 32256. Renovation by Deryl Patterson, Housing Design Matters, Inc. 904-237-8557.

The major obstacles to overcome in this remodel were architectural details reminiscent of the late sixties: low ceilings, small bathrooms, closed off kitchen and inadequate closets. The color palette also needed to be refreshed. A front gable was added to welcome the owner home with a more authentic French country style and a fresh color scheme enlivens the exterior foyer. The front door previously opened to a blank wall so the interior foyer was opened to capture the stunning view of the golf course and a 10-foot tray ceiling was created to increase the ceiling height.

The original kitchen was closed off from family room and had only a tiny breakfast nook. Both rooms now open to the family room, creating long horizontal site lines and a spectacular view of the golf course, and the ceiling was raised from 7’ to 8’. A large focal point island was also added to further update the space and increase functionality and the repurposed paneling from the family room was added to the front of the island for continuity. The original family room was dark, closed off from the kitchen, and did not include a media wall. The bar was removed and a media wall was added in its place. The shared flooring with kitchen creates a continuous flow and the blue stained cedar paneling was preserved.

The small master bath and closet were combined to create a larger master bath with a luxurious shower that is both frameless and curb-less for the elderly homeowner. The remodeler captured garage storage and a small office to create the large walk in closet and a second entrance was added to the bath for more convenient owner access.
